Creating an atmosphere of calmness in today’s world is not always easy; but no one, in my opinion, does well surrounded by chaos and disorder. Establishing structure and setting limits can provide a sense of security for children of all ages. Being “present” by really listening has become increasingly hard due to cell phones, computers, laptops, and other electronics. These all take our attention away from important conversations. We all want to feel heard so active listening and open communication are key.
To encourage independence, it is important for parents to give age-appropriate tasks, to teach healthy coping skills and to have realistic expectations. When children feel empowered, they feel as if they can master skills and “conquer the world”. Teaching coping strategies can help to manage stress—breathing exercises and other mindfulness techniques are just two examples.
We must realize there are other factors that play a role in a child’s emotional well-being: genetics, temperament, and the environment are a few examples. Lastly (and probably the most important thing) is for any caregiver to be a positive role model. What does this mean? Put on your own “oxygen mask” first—always practice self-care by managing your own stress and anxiety. This will be beneficial for you AND your child!
To sum it all up--parents play a very important role in shaping their child’s emotional well-being--- providing a supportive and nurturing environment, teaching healthy coping skills, and helping them develop a sense of security and self-worth will significantly help to decrease stress and anxiety.
